Technical Versatility
As an animation filmmaker, you combine technical skills and creativity to craft stories. How do you bring a drawn character, a digital figure, or a puppet to life? What lighting sets the right mood, and how do you create a memorable soundtrack? Using professional software, you’ll turn your ideas into reality. From motion studies to 2D and 3D animation, stop motion, and cinematic language—you’ll master all aspects. Moreover, you’ll learn how cinematography, editing, sound, and timing work together to tell a visual story.

Master Storyteller

Animation starts with a story. You’ll learn to write captivating scripts, create relatable characters, and evoke lasting emotions. Explore the art of dramaturgy, motion, and cinematic language, discovering how to tailor your ideas to your audience. Whether creating films or series, your stories will resonate and inspire.

Creating in the Studio

 During this program, you’ll work in a professional animation studio alongside experienced lecturers who are active in the animation world. Under their guidance, you’ll build a diverse portfolio and develop your own animation project—unique and relevant. This program offers the space and mentorship to grow into a true animation film auteur.

First Year: Essential Skills and Creative Tools

In your first year, you’ll be immersed in the world of animation film. Learn the fundamentals of the craft and explore various techniques like 2D, 3D, and stop motion. Build a solid foundation with lessons in visual language, workflows, and essential principles. Classes on concept development, scriptwriting, graphic design, and audio will support your creative growth. You’ll also dive into the rich history of animation and film art. This knowledge will come together in your Individual Artistic Research, where you’ll create a micro-short animation film. This project not only helps you apply your skills but also discover your artistic identity.

Second Year: Experimenting and Exploring

In the second year, you’ll build on the fundamentals and gain more freedom to experiment. You’ll shape your own trajectory—deepening your expertise or embracing versatility. Workshops allow you to refine technical skills and explore new media. Step into the world of visual effects while appreciating how traditional techniques remain timeless.
You’ll create another micro-short film, with an emphasis on experimentation and creative freedom. This is your chance to break the rules of the craft and further define your unique style as a creator. Reflective courses in Political and Cultural Theory will broaden your cultural knowledge. In the Transversal Workshop, you’ll collaborate with students from other academic disciplines on artistic research in the inspiring city of Brussels.

Third Year: Collaborative Creation and Specialization

Put your skills to work by developing original concepts for a fictional short film and an animated series. You’ll create a professional pre-production dossier, delving deep into technical mastery and experimentation. Explore various animation techniques and develop a concept that could grow into your master’s thesis. This year focuses on polishing your work and conducting research, preparing you for the challenges of the master’s year.

Master’s Year: Your Masterpiece

In your master’s year, you’ll bring everything into focus. You’ll work on a personal artistic research project culminating in your own short animated film. This work will showcase your identity—artistically, technically, and thematically—revealing who you are as a creator. This film will be the crowning achievement of your artistic development and self-reflection during the program.
At the same time, you’ll learn how to position your work professionally and build valuable connections. Whether you aspire to work in major studios, as a freelancer, or as an independent creator, you’ll graduate as a versatile and confident maker, bridging academic training and the professional world.

Admission Test

To start this programme, you must first pass an artistic admission test. The admission test consists of three parts: a dossier, an intake or selection interview and a workshop week. Read more about the admission tests here.
