The urban sonic landscape is a construction of many sounds vibrating and blending into each other, fading out or becoming audible again. It makes us listen to a public rhythm of city noises (cars, technologies, industries,…) and social noises (people encountering, talking, shouting …) that carry a lot of meaning and - unlistened - narratives.

We are part of the sonic city, in which we navigate and mediate our live, work and relations. Some of the sounds - which are mostly too loud or too present - can have a negative impact on our wellbeing. Can we mentally silence those sounds by contributing a new sound to the sonic space we share?

In this open atelier we will try to transform unwanted sounds by playing back new sounds on the same location. Can our experiment with sonic effects in an urban environment be a form of sonic resilience? Can we sound design the city ‘in realtime’ into a more beautiful soundscape?

Het stedelijke sonische landschap is een constructie van vele geluiden die vibreren en in elkaar overgaan, vervagen of weer hoorbaar worden. Het laat ons luisteren naar een publiek ritme van stadsgeluiden (auto's, technologieën, industrieën,...) en sociale geluiden (mensen die elkaar ontmoeten, praten, schreeuwen...) die veel betekenis en - onbeluisterde - verhalen met zich meedragen.

We maken deel uit van de auditieve stad waarin we navigeren en ons leven, werk en relaties bemiddelen. Sommige geluiden -vaak te luid of te aanwezig - kunnen een negatieve invloed hebben op ons welzijn. Is het mogelijk om deze geluiden mentaal tot zwijgen brengen, door een nieuw geluid toe te voegen aan de sonische ruimte die we delen?

In dit open atelier proberen we ongewenste geluiden te transformeren door nieuwe geluiden af te spelen op dezelfde locatie. Kan ons experiment met sonische effecten in een stedelijke omgeving een vorm van sonische weerstand zijn? Kunnen we de stad 'in realtime sounddesignen’ tot een mooier geluidslandschap.
