Intimiteit op afstand / Remote Intimacy - Laura Vandewynckel

Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…

Kan een tot leven gebracht levenloos object ons emotioneel prikkelen, ons aan het denken zetten, ons activeren? Laura Vandewynckel doet onderzoek naar automata (mechanische poppen en robots) en hun troostend, verbindend en gemeenschapsvormend potentieel. 

Vandaag stellen we vast dat automata er nog een grote verantwoordelijkheid bovenop kregen. Het zijn de hoeders geworden van ons fysieke en emotionele welzijn. In coronatijd werd de robot koning. Wie computer of GSM weerde, verloor zijn stem, zijn oren en zijn intimiteit voorbij ‘de bubbel’. Maar zijn er alternatieven voor de steriele communicatieapps en -toestellen?

Wat kan de kunstenaar en diens verbeelding in deze nieuwe ‘remote’ realiteit betekenen? Welke middelen kan de bij uitstek verbindende kunstpraktijk hanteren om mensen bijeen te brengen?

Laura presenteert een bonte cast aan knuffelbare en zichzelf schoonlikkende automata die met hun vragende niet-ogen, hun gespitste orensubstituten en ondeugende ingebeelde monden de straat op zijn gestuurd en het centrum vormen van betekenisvolle en coronaresistente interactierituelen.

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.

Do animated inanimate objects have the power to move us in an intellectual, emotional and literal sense? Laura Vandewynckel investigates automata (mechanical puppets and robots) and their comforting, bridging and community-building potential.

Today we see automata have received an even bigger responsibility. In times of pandemics they have become the guardians of our physical and emotional well-being. Corona crowned IT king. Whoever fended off the digital screen lost his voice, his ears and his intimacy beyond 'the bubble'. However, are there alternatives to the sterile communication apps and devices? 

In what way could the artist and his imagination contribute to this new ‘remote-reality’? What automatic means could be used by the arts, the connecting practice by excellence, to bring people together?  Laura presents a motley cast of cuddly and self-cleaning robot-objects that with their questioning non-eyes, their pointed ear-substitutes and imaginary foul-mouths have been sent out onto the street to become the center of meaningful and corona-proof interaction rituals.
