Filmscreening: Araya

NL: Van maandag 24 januari t.e.m. vrijdag 28 januari 2022 presenteren de onderzoekers van het RITCS School of Arts hun artistiek en theoretisch onderzoek tijdens Future Narratives.

Met alleen een cameraman aan haar zijde regisseerde Margot Benacerraf (°1926) de poëtische, narratieve documentaire Araya, gedraaid in overweldigend zwart-wit. Het schiereiland Araya in het Noord-Oosten van Venezuela wordt al vijfhonderd jaar ontgonnen voor haar zout.

Benacerraf brengt een prachtige ode aan de inwoners van Araya die allemaal zeer intens betrokken zijn bij de zoutverwerking. Dit pure mensenwerk staat echter op het punt overgenomen te worden door machines. Araya werd geselecteerd voor het Filmfestival van Cannes in 1959 en won samen met Hiroshima mon amour de Prijs van de Internationale Kritiek. In vergelijking met klassiekers uit 1959 zoals Hiroshima mon amour, Les 400 Coups en Nazarín is Araya minder bekend. Toch is het meer dan de moeite waard om deze onbeminde, cinematografische parel uit de Venezolaanse cinema te (her)ontdekken.

With only a two-person crew, director Margot Benacerraf (°1926) created the fascinating poetic narrative documentary, Araya, filmed in overwhelming black and white. For five hundred years, the Araya peninsula in northeastern Venezuela has been mined for its salt. Benacerraf captures Araya’s inhabitants so intensely involved in harvesting the salt just before the violent transformation of the salt operation by machines. Araya was selected for the Cannes film festival in 1959 and won the International Critics Award, shared with Hiroshima mon amour. In comparison with classics like Hiroshima mon amour, Les 400 Coups or Nazarin, Araya is lesser known, but it’s more than worth (re)discovering this cinematographic pearl in Venezuelan cinema.
