Als school was het stil tot vandaag rond het aanhoudende Palestina-Israël conflict. Hoog tijd om deze stilte te doorbreken. Beginnend met onze steun te betuigen aan àlle studenten en ouders geraakt door het conflict. We kunnen niet anders dan uitgesproken de kant te kiezen van het internationaal recht.

Het dodelijk en institutioneel geweld tegen burgers en terreur staan haaks op mensenrechten, ons kompas.

We zijn niet machteloos. Het is onze burgerlijke plicht om druk te blijven uitoefenen op onze overheden en op die manier bij te dragen aan een oplossing voor dit conflict. En we moeten er samen voor zorgen dat onze samenleving niet nog verder verdeeld raakt. We pleiten voor een permanente wapenstilstand en voor een einde aan de bezetting, die een politieke oplossing in de weg staan. Deze oplossing is nodig om de veiligheid en vrijheid van iedereen te waarborgen.

We willen als school ruimte bieden voor dialoog en gesprek en hopen dat wat binnen onze muren kan, misschien als voorbeeld van hoop kan dienen voor wat er buiten mogelijk is.

Film: "Tantura" van Alon Schwarz

In de jaren 1990 bewees onderzoek dat het Israëlische leger hoogstwaarschijnlijk een slachtpartij had aangericht in het Palestijnse dorp Tantura in 1948. Maar meerdere soldaten trokken hun verklaring in, het onderzoek werd afgeserveerd en de onderzoeker zwartgemaakt en bedreigd. Filmmaker Alon Schwartz stort zich opnieuw op de zaak, met onthullend resultaat.

Cecilia Cenciarelli, curatrice van het cinefiel filmfestival ‘Il cinema ritrovato’ in Bologna leidt deze indrukwekkende film in, een Syrisch-Egyptisch-Palestijns filmmeesterwerk. Eén van de eerste films die het tragische lot en lijden van de Palestijnse vluchtelingen toonde en eveneens een ongelooflijke suspense thriller, die geïnspireerd lijkt op “Le salaire de la peur” van Clouzot. 
Deze vaak gecensureerde film die in omloop was op een kopie in slechte staat werd in 2023 door de Cineteca di Bologna digitaal gerestaureerd. Het resultaat is verbluffend. Mede dankzij CINEA en ons programma CLASSICS RESTORED kunnen we deze helaas zeer actuele en urgente film tonen in CINEMA RITCS.

Reflectieavond: "SSHHT you'll wake up my silence"

4 sprekers gaan vanuit verschillende artistieke perspectieven in dialoog met elkaar, waar we een aantal thema’s behandelen en kennis delen rond de socio-politieke context van het Israël-Palestina conflict.

*Het blijft belangrijk om je te informeren, om te begrijpen. Heftige emoties leiden tot nog heftigere emoties. Verschillende bevolkingsgroepen krijgen, omwille van het conflict, te maken met verhoogd wantrouwen en versterkte vooroordelen. Er is een reële angst voor groeiend antisemitisme en toenemende moslimhaat. Blijf vechten tegen het over één kam scheren van een volledige groep mensen. Al die mensen zijn individuen die allemaal anders naar het conflict kijken. Haat is nooit het antwoord. (Hannah Arendt Instituut)

Until today, the school has been quiet about the persistent Palestine-Israel conflict. The time has come to break this silence. We would like to start by expressing our support to all students and parents affected by the conflict. We cannot afford to be anything but outspokenly on the side of international law.

Both institutional deathly violence and terrorism against civilians are diametrically opposed to human rights, which is our compass.

We are not powerless. It is our civic duty to maintain pressure on our governments to help resolve this conflict. And we must work together to ensure that our society is not further divided. We call for a permanent ceasefire and for an end to the occupation, which stands in the way of a political solution that would allow safety and freedom for all.

As a school, we want to provide space for dialogue and conversation. We hope that by showing what is possible within our walls, we can perhaps serve as an example of hope for what is possible outside these walls.

Film screening: "Tantura" by Alon Schwarz

In the 1990s, research claimed the Israeli army had committed a massacre in the Palestinian village of Tantura in 1948. However, several former Israeli soldiers retracted their testimony, the research was dismissed and the researcher ostracized and threatened. Now, director Alon Schwartz conducts an eye-opening re-examination.

Cecilia Cenciarelli, curator of the cinephile film festival 'Il cinema ritrovato' in Bologna, introduces this impressive film, a Syrian-Egyptian-Palestinian film masterpiece. One of the first films to show the tragic fate and suffering of Palestinian refugees and also an incredible suspense thriller, which seems inspired by Clouzot's “Le salaire de la peur”.
This often censored film that circulated on a copy in poor condition was digitally restored by the Cineteca di Bologna in 2023. The result is astonishing. Partly thanks to CINEA and our CLASSICS RESTORED program, we can show this unfortunately very actual and urgent film in CINEMA RITCS.

*It remains important to be informed to understand. Fierce emotions lead to even fiercer emotions. Different population groups, because of the conflict, face heightened distrust and reinforced prejudice. There is a real fear of growing anti-Semitism and increasing Muslim hatred. Keep fighting against lumping an entire group of people together. All people are individuals who all look at the conflict differently. Hate is never the answer. (Hannah Arendt Institute)
