WINTER SCHOOL: INTERDISCIPLINARY BODY
Curated by IRA GORYAINOVA

Working, eating and discussing together: that is the RITCS Winter School. The annual event brings together artists and arts students from across Europe around a central theme for a two week interdisciplinary research module. This years edition of the RITCS Winter School is curated by Ira Goryainova and will focus on the topic 'INTERDISCIPLINARY BODY'. In the course of the Winter School workshops and lectures will be held at various locations in Brussels. All lectures on Monday 16th of January are open to the public. Welcome!

About 'INTERDISCIPLINARY BODY'

A creative process is often seen as disembodied, especially when it comes to the technicity. Writing, directing, filming, scenography, lighting, editing, all of these are often considered as purely cerebral activities. Yet, each artistic activity requires a body, and behind each technicality functions a body too. How does the body influence the technical side of a creation process, and how does the creation process influence the body creating it? Or: when we skip the creative cerebral masterminds, and combine technique + body, where do we arrive? Emphasizing the presence of the body in theatre and filmmaking through accessing the technical side of the process, this program consists of several workshops, given not by directors, but the so-called artistic ‘periphery’. Each workshop takes corporeality as a starting point.

  • Staging the body
  • Embodied voice
  • Filming through body
  • Editing body

Program lectures

10h00-10h30 Welcome by Ira Goryainova and Tim Martens

10h30-12h00 Cultural Policies of the body: (online) lecture by Maria Rachmaninova
The lecture focuses on the emergence of scripts of corporeality and critically reflects on different systems of power and their performative effects. It will examine everyday practices, gendered patterns and principles of organizing social spaces. Strategies of escaping from mainstream imperatives and their unpopular but conceptually equally valid alternatives will also be touched upon.

12h00-13h00 Lunch break

13h00-14h00 CANCELLED Body through psychoanalysis: lecture by Shauni De Gussem

13h30-14h30 Neurocinematics: lecture by Jelena Rosic
The lecture introduces “neurocinematics” - a neuroscience research paradigm that uses films in experiments to study the human brain in a more “life-like” manner but also to reveal how film aesthetics work with our attention, memory, and emotions. The topics will be approached in an interdisciplinary way and point out the body’s role in cognition.
