De studenten van Cinéclub RITCS kozen in oktober voor films rond het thema “Death & Beauty.” Zo kwamen zij op het fraaie SUSPIRIA (1977) van Dario Argento, een fantasmagorisch schouwspel over een balletstudent die verstrikt raakt in een luguber complot binnen de muren van haar school. De Italiaanse regisseur Dario Argento (Rome, 1940) staat bekend om zijn plethora aan kleurrijke en ongrijpbare horrorfilms, vol aandachttrekkende decorstukken, onvoorspelbare camerabewegingen en onnavolgbare plotlijnen. SUSPIRIA is misschien wel zijn meest verhalende werk. De film heeft trekken van het Italiaanse giallo-genre, een flamboyant soort slasherfilm waarin veel nadruk wordt gelegd op bloederige femicides, maar voegt daar een element van bovennatuurlijke suspense aan toe. Bij vlagen is SUSPIRIA onverbloemde Italiaanse pulp – de onnatuurlijke afstand van camera tot personages, het potsierlijke technicolor decor, de stijve exposition – maar op andere momenten bewijst Argento zich als een meester van de mise-en-scène, in het maken van een film waar je alleen maar verder naar wilt blijven kijken, kijken en nog eens kijken.

This month, the students of the Cinéclub association chose films to do with the theme of “Death & Beauty.” The first of their choices is SUSPIRIA (1977), Dario Argento’s thrilling phantasmagoria about a ballet student finding herself entrapped in a lurid and increasingly blood-splattered conspiracy within the walls of her school. Director Dario Argento (Rome, 1940) is well-known for redefining Italian horror with his plethora of colorful, elusive horror films, chock-full of attention-grabbing setpieces, incomprehensible camera movements and even stranger storylines. SUSPIRIA might be his most narratively complete work to date. The film has shades of the Italian giallo genre – a flamboyant kind of slasher film in which much attention is lavished upon gory close-ups of femicide – but adds elements of supernatural suspense to the mix.
Viewed with a modern eye, one may find that SUSPIRIA occasionally veers into cult classic territory. Its robotic, unempathetic distance to its characters, the extraneous technicolor, the extremely stiff scenes of exposition.. However, it may just charm you beyond your expectations, because Dario Argento proves himself to be a master of the misè-en-scene. He crafts a film that is immeasurably watchable, every frame popping with color, details and drama.
