NL: De Belgische animatiefilmmeester en levende legende Raoul Servais kreeg eind juni 2018 een permanente tentoonstellingsvleugel in Mu.Zee, het Kunstmuseum aan Zee in Oostende. Raoul Servais is 90 jaar en nog altijd actief als tekenaar en animatiefilmer. In deze documentaire volgt Rudy Pinceel hem 3 jaar lang, tot aan deze tentoonstelling. “Servais” ging in wereldpremière op de slotdag van het Filmfestival van Oostende 2018.
Daaropvolgend: de kortfilm DER LANGE KERL (2022). November 1914, het front in Vlaanderen. In een deels verwoeste hulppost is de gewonde Franse soldaat François de enig overgeblevene. Hij ligt op een veldbed en heeft een open wonde in de zij. Plots ziet hij het silhouet van een figuur met punthelm op het hoofd opdoemen.
De onervaren, jonge Duitser, Friedrich, is wegens zijn reusachtige gestalte voorop gestuurd om de vijand schrik aan te jagen. Langzaam stapt hij naar de gewonde toe. François houdt het enige wapen dat hij bezit, een granaat, klaar voor gebruik. Friedrich trekt een revolver…
Jagen de twee jonge ‘vijanden’ mekaar de dood in of krijgt de confrontatie een andere wending?

EN: At the end of June 2018, Mu.ZEE, the fine arts museum in Ostend, opened two permanent galleries dedicated to the work of film legend Raoul Servais, who was 90. The documentary SERVAIS (2018) narrates the three years that led up to this milestone in Servais’s career.
Afterwards: the short film DER LANGE KERL (2022). November 1914, the front in Flanders. In a partly destroyed aid post, the wounded French soldier François is the only one left. He is lying on a cot and has an open wound in the side. Suddenly he sees the silhouette of a figure with a pointed helmet on his head.
The inexperienced young German, Friedrich, was sent to the front because of his gigantic stature to terrify the enemy. Slowly he steps towards the injured person. François keeps the only weapon he owns, a grenade, ready for use. Friedrich pulls out a revolver ...
Are the two young 'enemies' chasing each other to death or does the confrontation take a different turn?
