NEDERLANDS: Het ingenieuze PATERSON (2016) van regisseur Jim Jarmusch druist in tegen vele basisprincipes van scenario: er is geen duidelijk conflict en ook geen makkelijk aanwijsbare ontwikkeling. Daarentegen: we volgen een buschauffeur, Paterson, in een slaperig stadje in New Jersey. Hij maakt wat dingen mee en schrijft af en toe poëzie. Het genre kan je het beste beschrijven als “slice-of-life". Desalniettemin werd PATERSON met veel lof ontvangen. Het ogenschijnlijk kleine verhaal sprak toch tot de verbeelding en de emotie. Het ingehouden spel van o.a. Adam Driver en Golshifteh Farahani raakt. En PATERSON past precies in het rijtje van regisseur Jarmusch, bekend om zijn minimalistische, ongehaaste films (DOWN BY LAW; GHOST DOG; COFFEE AND CIGARETTES).
ENGLISH: The ingenious PATERSON (2016), directed by Jim Jarmusch, upsets many of the basic tenets of screenwriting: there is no real conflict and no easily discerned development. On the contrary: PATERSON is about an eponymous bus driver in a sleepy New Jersey town. As his daily life plays out, we see him writing poetry; the film could thus be characterized as a “slice-of-life.” Irregardless, PATERON received much praise. However small the story may have been, it spoke to viewers worldwide, and the careful acting of Adam Driver and Golshifteh Farahani evoked an emotional response. The film fits neatly in Jarmusch’ repertoire, known for his minimalistic, unhurried films such as DOWN BY LAW, GHOST DOG and COFFEE AND CIGARETTES.
FRANCAIS: L’ingénieux PATERSON (2016) réalisé par Jim Jarmusch va complètement à l’encontre de nombreux principes de base du scenario: il n’y a pas de conflit prononcé, ni de développement transparent. En revanche nous suivons un chauffeur de bus, Paterson, dans une ville somnolente à New Jersey. Il vit certaines choses et écrit de temps en temps de la poésie. Bref: une représentation cinématographique d’un moment dans une vie. Néanmoins le film a été très bien reçu. Cette - à première vu - ‘petite histoire’ a pu émouvoir et faire appel à l’imagination. Le jeu restreint de Adam Driver et Golshifteh Farahani touche profondément. De ce fait, PATERSON fait merveilleusement partie de l’oeuvre de Jarmusch, connu pour ses films plutôt minimalistes et calmes comme DOWN BY LAW; GHOST DOG; COFFE AND CIGARETTES.
