In deze bizarre horror-komedie uit de jaren negentig belandt een familie in de grip van vegetarische goblins. De film is géén vervolg op TROLL (1986), maar werd bewust zo in de markt gezet door de distributeur. Misschien om af te leiden van hoe episch desastreus (maar ook memorabel) de film werkelijk is.
De Walls-familie gaat op vakantie naar een boerderij in het dorpje Nilbog (‘goblin’, maar dan omgekeerd gespeld). Voordat ze vertrekken wordt zoontje Joshua ‘s nachts bezocht door de geest van zijn grootvader, die hem waarschuwt dat goblins in Nilbog de familie zullen veranderen in planten om hen zo te kunnen opeten. Joshua’s familie slaat de waarschuwing echter in de wind en vertrekt naar Nilbog, met alle gevolgen van dien..
Wat bezielde in godsnaam de filmmakers, het Italiaanse koppel Claudio Fragasso en Rossella Drudi? Twintig jaar later nog steeds een relevante vraag, want er is geen touw aan het maakproces van TROLL 2 vast te knopen. Ten eerste bedacht scenarist Drudi het verhaal, over moordzuchtige vegetarische goblins, uit ergernis over haar vrienden die vegetariërs waren geworden. Ten tweede schreef zij het script in gebroken, half-Italiaans Engels, en ten derde werd het uitgevoerd met minimale financiële middelen op een set in Utah, waarbij lokale dorpsbewoners werden aangetrokken om hoofdrollen te vervullen. Dit alles zorgde voor enorm veel miscommunicatie, dat je, met alle hilariteit van dien, zeker ook terugziet in de film.
Al deze factoren maakten TROLL 2 een grote culthit. “Een van de slechtste films die ooit is gemaakt,” vonden veel filmcritici, en daarom juist zo leuk. Van het brakke Engels in het script tot de amateuristische acteurs, tot de soms bloedenge scènes dan weer gevolgd door kinderachtige komedie: dit is een film om te beleven.

What on earth possessed the filmmakers, the Italian couple Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi? Twenty years later, it is still a relevant question, because the creative process behind TROLL 2 is as comfounding as it is fascinating. First of all, screenwriter Drudi came up with the story - about murderous vegetarian goblins - out of sheer annoyance at her friends who had become vegetarians. Second, she wrote the script in broken, half-Italian English, and third, it was shot with minimal budget on a set in Utah, with local villagers filling some of the lead roles. This inevitably led to a lot of miscommunication, which you can certainly see in the film to a hilarious extent.
All these factors made TROLL 2 a huge cult hit. Film critics commonly place it on the list of worst movies ever made, yet it is a ton of fun. From the poor English in the script to the amateurish actors, to the sometimes bloody scenes followed by childish comedy: this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience of a movie.
