MASTERCLASS 'Antigone' door Alenka Zupančič

  • FUTURE NARRATIVES

(ENG) From 27 to 31 January, RITCS School of Arts is devoted to research for a whole week. The focus of this research week is on FUTURE NARRATIVES, stories of the future.

The subject of this masterclass is an ancient tragedy: Sophocles’ Antigone. Guided by Alenka Zupančič we will explore the fascination the tragic heroine Antigone has exerted and continues to exert in the most diverse eras and contexts – for a recent example, see Stefan Hertmans’ Antigone in Molenbeek.

During the masterclass, this series of questions will preoccupy us in particular: what is Antigone’s act, to bury her brother and enemy of the state, Polyneices, based upon? Can this transgressive act be conceived as a model for contemporary political action? Are there laws, more important than the existing and collectively endorsed ones? Or should we rather take Antigone as a beautiful illustration of how desire is a desire for death, and therefore consider it as a moral warning?

This masterclass will take place in English.
