NL: Germaine Dulac was de eerste feministische filmmaker en een sleutelfiguur in de opkomst van de Franse avant-gardefilm in de jaren twintig. In de vroege 20ste eeuw was ze al fotograaf en schrijver voor twee feministische magazines, La Fronde en La Française.
Dulac was gefascineerd door beweging en in haar (zeer abstracte) films zie je dit terug. Ze poogde een stijl te ontwikkelen die ze zelf omschreef als “integrale film, een visuele symfonie bestaand uit ritmische beelden.” “LA COQUILLE ET LE CLERGYMAN” (1928) is hier een goed voorbeeld van. In de film zie je niet alleen Dulacs toewijding aan abstractie en beweging, maar ook aan feministische ideeën.

EN: Germaine Dulac was the first feminist filmmaker and a key figure in the development of the French Avant Garde cinema of the '20s. In the early 1900s, she had been a photographer and writer in two feminist journals, La Fronde and La Française.
Dulac was fascinated with movement and her abstract films reflect this. She attempted to create a style that she dubbed 'the integral film... a visual symphony made of rhythmic images.' La Coquille et le Clergyman (1928) is her best example of integral film. In addition to abstract images, Dulac was also known for her abiding commitment to feminist issues. This is present in this film, too.
