IL LAVORO was Luchino Visconti’s bijdrage aan de anthologiefilm BOCCACIO ‘70 (1962), waarin vier legendarische Italiaanse regisseurs (Vittoria De Sica, Federico Fellini, Mario Monicelli en Visconti) elk een kortfilm maakten over de liefde. In de woorden van Visconti zelf: “Ik ben erg dol op de IL LAVORO-episode in BOCCACIO ‘70. Ik zie het als een schets van het karakter van de moderne vrouw, zoals ik er veel ken, vooral in de Milanese sferen. Een moderne vrouw die veel nadruk legt op dingen als geld, luxe, auto’s, een zitplek in het Scala, en geen tijd besteedt aan de echt belangrijke zaken in het leven. Ik ben wel eens vermaand over het emotionele moment dat zij aan het einde doormaakt; ik vind het zelf consistent met haar karakter. Het moment waarop ze zich bijna beledigd voelt als haar echtgenoot voor haar betaalt is zelfmedelijden, en heeft niets met de algemene situatie te maken, want die snapt ze helemaal niet. Het is zoals de personages in Chekhov’s toneelstuk De kersentuin; ze laten het gebeuren dat de tuin en de kersenbomen verkocht worden, zonder te beseffen dat deze verkoop gelijkstaat aan ondergang; de ondergang van hun milieu en hun samenleving, niet simpelweg die van één personage. Kort gezegd; dit is het speelse morele vendetta van een liefdevolle jonge echtgenote, die verraden is door de prijzige uitgaven die haar man doet om ‘aandelen op de seksuele markt’ te kunnen verkrijgen. De kamers, de grijze zijden banken, de authentieke 18de eeuwse Franse bibliotheek van eikenhout, de abstracte schilderijen van Domietta Hercolani; alles dat we door Rottuno’s camera gevangen zien verbeeldt de wereld waarin de personages leven. Het is een koude en kostbare wereld, zielloos; hoe hard Tomas Milian en Romy Schneider ook naar de ziel blijven zoeken.”

IL LAVORO was Luchino Visconti’s part of BOCCACIO ‘70 (1962), in which four legendary Italian directors (Vittoria De Sica, Federico Fellini, Mario Monicelli and Visconti) each contributed a short film on the subject of love. About the film, Visconti himself said: “I really like the Il lavoro episode in Boccaccio ’70. I think of it as a sketch of the character of a modern woman, like many that I know, above all in Milanese society: a modern woman who places great importance on money, luxury, cars, a box at the Scala, and all these kinds of things, and does not really care about the truly important things in life. I have been admonished for the emotional moment that she goes through at the end. I think it is consistent with the character. The moment in which she feels almost offended by the fact that her husband pays her is like a moment of pity for herself, and not for the more general situation, which she doesn’t understand at all. It’s like the characters in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard; they allow the garden and the cherry trees to be sold without realising that the sale represents ruin – the ruin of a milieu and a society, and not simply of one character. In short, it is the playful moral vendetta of a loving young wife betrayed by her husband’s costly expenditure on ‘shares on the sexual stock exchange’. The rooms, the grey velvet couches, the authentic 18th-century French library in oak, the abstract paintings by Domietta Hercolani, everything that Rotunno’s camera captures represents the world in which the characters live. It is a cold and precious world, lacking the soul that Tomas Milian and Romy Schneider search for but never manage to obtain.”
