NL: Begin februari overleed de iconische actrice Monica Vitti. In de jaren zestig was ze de muze van de Italiaanse filmmeester van de moderne menselijke vervreemding, Michelangelo Antonioni (1912-2007). Met Antonioni realiseerde Monica Vitti de magistrale films “L’Avventura”, “La Notte”, L’Eclisse” en “Il Deserto rosso”. In “Il Deserto rosso” (1964) speelt Vitti het vrouwelijk hoofdpersonage, Giuliana. In een industriële woestenij vlakbij Ravenna zien we de gedeprimeerde Giuliana rondzwerven op zoek naar liefde, begrip en zin van haar bestaan. “Il Deserto rosso” toont de stilte en de leegte van het menselijk bestaan op een soms ondraaglijk mooie manier. Deze eerste en opzienbarende kleurenfilm van Antonioni was goed voor de Gouden Leeuw op het filmfestival van Venetië.

EN: Early February 2022, iconic actress Monica Vitti passed away. In the sixties, she was the muse of an Italian grand master of film about modern human alienation: Michelangelo Antonioni (1912-2007). Together with Antonioni, Vitti created masterful films such as “L’Avventura”, “La Notte”, L’Eclisse” and “Il Deserto rosso”. In “Il Deserto rosso” (1964), Vitti plays main character Giuliana. In the industrial desert near Ravenna, we see a depressed Giuliana wander, looking for love, empathy, and the meaning of her existence. “Il Deserto rosso” shows the silence and emptiness of human existence in an often unbearably beautiful manner. This first and eye-catching color film of Antonioni’s ended up winning him a Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival.
