'Hacking for the Commons' - Philippe Borrel

Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…

Tegenwoordig maakt IT de kern uit van bijna alle menselijke activiteit. Heeft de technologie ons geholpen om meer autonoom te worden of zijn we getransformeerd in de passieve consumenten van een markt die globaal geworden is? We zijn er ons niet eens van bewust dat, in het hart van de technologie, twee ratio’s nu met elkaar botsen: sinds de jaren 80 zijn de vrije softwarebewegingen, vanuit hun emancipatorische principes, begonnen met het aanvallen van de exclusieve en ‘private’ bewegingen die de intellectuele eigendomsrechten verdedigen. Gratis software, gratis zaden, gratis medicijnen, gratis kennis... Deze bewegingen, die zich focussen op vrijheid, samenwerking en delen, hebben als doel de autonomie en macht van de gebruiker te herstellen, wat leidt tot een wereld zonder patenten, ten voordele van het algemeen belang.

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.

Nowadays, IT is at the heart of almost all human activity. Has it helped to make us more autonomous or has it transformed us into the passive consumers of a market which has become global? We are not even aware that, at the heart of technology, two rationales are now clashing: since the 80’s, free software movements, motivated by their emancipatory principles, have begun to attack the exclusive and “private” ones defending intellectual property rights. Free software, free seeds, free medicines, free knowledge… Focusing on freedom, cooperation and sharing, these movements aim to restore the user’s autonomy and power, leading to a world free of patents, for the benefit of the common good.
