Dé pornofilm die in 2009 nog tot verhit debat en Kamervragen in Nederland leidde toen de publieke omroep hem wilde vertonen. Je hebt er misschien van gehoord, maar of je hem ooit gezien hebt is een andere vraag: het iconische “Deep Throat”, het begin van de “Golden Age of Porn”.

We zullen niet teveel tijd besteden aan het “plot”, want dat is feitelijk flinterdun en alleen in leven geroepen om de vele, heftige seksscènes enigszins te rechtvaardigen. Ook is de film zelf helemaal niet zo interessant om te zien; korrelige jaren zeventig-cinematografie, veel slechte shots, en hij duurt slechts een uur.

De historische waarde is echter ongekend. In een tijd waarin de Verenigde Staten nog vast hield aan puriteinse seksuele repressie maakte “Deep Throat” enorm wat los. De middenklasse toonde zich ineens geïnteresseerd in seks. In de film ging het om het genot van vrouwen, niet mannen, bij het klaarkomen – ook ongekend. En als kers op de taart draait “Deep Throat” om de clitoris van de hoofdpersoon – dat de clitoris überhaupt bestond, daar werd in veel kringen in Amerika openlijk aan getwijfeld pre-1972.

Er is vaak geprobeerd de film te verbieden, en dat is vaak ook gelukt. Een acteur van de film moest zelfs verschijnen in de rechtbank om zich te verantwoorden over zijn meespelen in de film. Nog later verdiepte de controverse toen hoofdrolspeelster Linda Lovelace een boekje opendeed over haar toxische relatie met “Deep Throat”-producer Chuck Traynor, toen haar man. Volgens Lovelace bedreigde Traynor haar en stond ze onder grote druk om de film te doen. “Elke keer als iemand deze film ziet, zien ze mijn verkrachting,” zei ze in 1986. De kinderen van regisseur Damiano beweren stellig dat Linda Lovelace genoot van “Deep Throat” en haar verworven vedettenstatus. “Deep Throat” hield haar bovendien weg van haar misbruikende man. “Deep Throat” is een controversiële, maar geen eenduidige film, zoveel is zeker.

De vertoning van “Deep Throat“ wordt, om al deze redenen, omkaderd met een stevige disclaimer vooraf en een diepgaande discussie achteraf. Onder andere de vraag of je een film als “Deep Throat” nog moet willen programmeren komt aan bod, en vragen vanuit het publiek zijn zeker ook welkom.

The one and only Deep Throat, instigator of a 1970s sexual revolution. You may not have seen it yourself, but you’ve definitely heard of it: as the first “cinematic” pornographic production, it stood at the forefront of the so-called Golden Age of Porn.

It’s useless to regale you with “plot details”, as the only plot this film has is razor thin and merely serves to frame the endless gratuitous sex scenes. The film itself is also, quite honestly, not that interesting: grainy 1970s cinematography, wild and erratic shots, and it’s only an hour long.

From a film-historical standpoint, however, it is significant. In a time of puritanical sexual repression in the United States, Deep Throat was a way forward for many people. The middle classes suddenly showed a new interest in sex. The focus shifted to women’s orgasms and women’s clitorises – before the 1970s, the existence of the clitoris as a whole had been doubted a lot in the U.S..

Many have tried to ban this film, and many have succeeded. One of the actors even had to appear in a U.S. court on charges of indecency for appearing in the film. The controversy deepened later as main actress Linda Lovelace revealed that during the making of the film, she was embroiled in a toxic, abusive relationship with producer Chuck Traynor, who coerced her to do many of the film’s scenes under threat of violence. “Virtually every time someone watches that movie, they're watching me being raped,” she said in 1986.

This showing of Deep Throat will, for all these aforementioned reasons, be framed with a disclaimer before the showing and a table discussion afterwards. Among the questions that will be discussed: what about the ethics of programming a movie like this in 2022? Audience participation is encouraged.
