NL: Het ontbreekt de jonge Valentina aan niets: ze heeft een man, een goede baan en een hoge maatschappelijke status. Toch kan dat alles de leegte om haar heen niet vullen. Haar man, een geoloog (gespeeld door de Russische singer-songwriter en cultfiguur Vladimir Visotski) is altijd weg, haar werk bij de overheid is saai en haar huis is leeg. Als er een meisje arriveert dat verliefd is op haar man, beziet Valentina dit met een mengeling van nieuwsgierigheid, medeleven en onthechting.
Muratova beschouwt Brief Encounters, haar tweede langspeelfilm, als de echte start van haar stormachtige artistieke carrière. En inderdaad worden haar unieke stem en visie zichtbaar in dit vrij meanderend portret van een driehoeksverhouding. De vertelling zit vol flashbacks en breuken in de tijd; romantiek valt samen met desillusie, de hartstochtelijke toon verandert in afstandelijkheid, en vice versa. Toen de beoogde hoofdrolspeelster op het laatste moment afzegde, besloot Muratova de rol van Valentina zelf te spelen. Hoe indrukwekkend ze dat ook deed, ze heeft daarna nooit meer in een film gespeeld.

EN: Young Valentina has little to want in her life: she’s got a husband, a good job and high societal status. Yet, there is a void inside her that cannot be filled. Her husband, a geologist played by Russian cult legend Vladimir Visotski, is always on the road, her job is actually quite boring and her house is empty. When a girl, enamored with Valentina’s husband, arrives on the scene, Valentina views this with a mixture of curiosity, empathy and detachment.
Muratova considers BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, her second feature film, to be the true start of her stormy artistic career. Indeed, her unique directorial voice and vision are evident in this meandering portrait of a three-way relationship. The narrative is full of flashbacks and distortions of time; romance collides with disappointment, the romantic tone frequently turns cold and vice versa. When Muratova’s main actress canceled at the last moment, she decided to fulfill the main role herself. However impressively she did so, she would never play in any movie again afterward.
