ANTICHRIST (2009) is een getormenteerde film vol schuld en seksuele paniek. Een echtpaar (Willem Dafoe en Charlotte Gainsbourg) verliest een zoontje dat te pletter valt terwijl zij de liefde bedrijven. Verdriet en wroeging drijven de vrouw in een catatonische toestand. De zelfgenoegzame man wil haar genezen door haar naar de plek te brengen die zij het meest vreest: hun huisje in het bos. Hij is cognitief therapeut: trauma’s genees je door ongunstige denk- en gedragspatronen los te masseren. In alle redelijkheid. Maar Freud blijkt nog niet dood. Hun huisje wordt het toneel van een freudiaanse, of eigenlijk jungiaanse nachtmerrie, een oorlog tussen de seksen zonder krijgsgevangenen.
Bij de première van “Antichrist” in Cannes kwamen veel ontstelde reacties. Het meest gehoorde verwijt: vrouwenhaat. Opnieuw. Antichrist wemelt van bosdieren die hun nageslacht oppeuzelen; ‘Zij’ is een heks die man en kind subtiel foltert. Von Trier-haters gooien de vrouwen in zijn films doorgaans op één hoop met anekdotes over extreme tensie op zijn filmsets en gillende ruzies met actrices. Misschien dat hoofdrolspeler Charlotte Gainsbourg iets brisants meldt. Antichrist was volgens haar een uitputtingsslag, maar geen kwaad woord over Von Trier. Met een masturbatie- en seksscène tussen boomwortels en het gebruik van pornoactrices als body double had zij geen moeite, een wurgscène was lastiger. Daarvoor moest ze van de regisseur eerst „afschuwelijke wurgbeelden op internet” bekijken.
“Antichrist” is Von Triers meest persoonlijke film. Hij verwerkte zijn ervaringen met cognitieve therapie. Een andere inspiratie komt terloops ter sprake als Von Trier vertelt hoe gegriefd hij was toen filmjournalisten schamper grinnikten bij zijn pratende dieren die hun eigen jongen verscheuren. Dat is geen grapje, zegt hij stellig. Von Trier begint een betoog over sjamanisme. De geleidegeest, of totemdier van zijn lievelingstante was een vos, zegt hij. Toen zij in het ziekenhuis lag en hij haar wilde bezoeken, vertelde een rode vos dat zij dood was. Daarna kwam Von Trier twee witte vossen tegen die zeiden: ‘vertrouw nooit de eerste vos die je ontmoet’. En inderdaad, de tante bleek in leven.

ANTICHRIST (2009) is a tormented film, full of guilt and sexual panic. A married couple (Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg) lose a son as he plummets to his death while making love. Sadness and remorse drive the wife into a catatonic state. The complacent husband tries to help her by taking her to the place she fears most: their cabin in the woods. He is a cognitive therapist: in his reasoning, one heals traumas by massaging unfavorable thinking and behavioral patterns. But Freud is not dead yet. Their cottage becomes the scene of a Freudian, or rather Jungian nightmare, a war between the sexes without prisoners of war.
At the premiere of “Antichrist” in Cannes, there were many dismayed reactions. The most common accusation: misogyny. Again. Antichrist teems with woodland creatures devouring their progeny; women are witches who subtly torture men and children. Von Trier-haters usually associate his female characters with anecdotes about extreme tension on his film sets, and screaming fights with actresses. According to actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, “Antichrist” was a struggle to film, but she never had anything bad to say about Von Trier in post-Antichrist interviews. She had no problem with a masturbation and sex scene between tree roots and the use of porn actresses as body doubles. A strangulation scene was more difficult. For that, the director first had her watch "horrible strangulation images on the internet".
“Antichrist” is von Trier's most personal film. He processed his own experiences with cognitive therapy. He was upset when, at Cannes, journalists chuckled scornfully at a scene of talking animals tearing up their own young. “It wasn’t a joke,” Von Trier rebutted them firmly. He began speaking of shamanism. His favorite aunt's guide spirit, or totem animal, was a fox, he says. While she was in the hospital and he wanted to visit her, a red fox told her she was dead. Then von Trier came across two white foxes who said, "Never trust the first fox you meet." And indeed, the aunt turned out to be alive.
