Working class melancholia. Een gesprek met/ A conversation with Cynthia Cruz
NL: Van maandag 24 januari t.e.m. vrijdag 28 januari 2022 presenteren de onderzoekers van het RITCS School of Arts hun artistiek en theoretisch onderzoek tijdens Future Narratives.
Naar aanleiding van haar meest recente publicatie, The Melancholia of Class (Repeater Books, 2021), gaan we met Cynthia Cruz in gesprek over hedendaagse vormen van melancholie, in het bijzonder die gerelateerd aan klasse. Hoewel 'arbeidersklasse' uit ons dagelijks vocabulaire lijkt te zijn gewist, impliceert dit niet dat ze niet zou bestaan. Het is eerder zo dat de arbeidersklasse de klasse is waarvan mensen zich willen losmaken, hetzij via drugsmisbruik en ander zelfdestructief gedrag, hetzij door professioneel succes toe te treden tot de dominante middenklasse. Hoewel de laatste optie de meest gezonde lijkt en in overeenstemming met dominante ideeën over verdienste en verantwoordelijkheid, stelt Cruz dat deze gewenste sociale mobiliteit een diep gevoel van verlies (van zichzelf) met zich mee kan brengen.
Cynthia Cruz is de auteur van zes gedichtenbundels. Disquieting: Essays on Silence, een verzameling kritische essays waarin het concept van stilte als een vorm van verzet wordt verkend, werd in 2019 gepubliceerd. The Melancholia of Class, een onderzoek naar freudiaanse melancholie en de arbeidersklasse, werd in 2021 door Repeater Books uitgebracht. Cruz behaalde een MA in Duitse Taal- en Letterkunde aan de Rutgers University en promoveert momenteel aan de European Graduate School, waar haar onderzoeksgebied psychoanalyse en filosofie is.

On the occasion of her most recent publication, The Melancholia of Class (Repeater Books, 2021), this conversation with Cynthia Cruz will deal with contemporary forms of melancholia and the one related to class in particular. Although ‘working class’ seems to be erased from our everyday vocabulary, it does not cease to exist. It is rather that the working class is the one class people aim to move away from, either via drug abuse and other self-destructive behaviors, or through professional success entering the dominant middle class. Although the latter option appears to be the more healthy one and in accordance with dominant ideas about merit and responsibility, Cruz argues that this desired social mobility may entail a profound sense of loss (of oneself).
Cynthia Cruz is the author of six collections of poems. Disquieting: Essays on Silence, a collection of critical essays exploring the concept of silence as a form of resistance, was published in 2019. The Melancholia of Class, an examination of Freudian melancholia and the working class, was published by Repeater Books in 2021. Cruz earned an MA in German Language and Literature from Rutgers University and is currently pursuing a PhD at the European Graduate School where her area of research is psychoanalysis and philosophy.
