Classics Restored – The Trial (1962) - Orson Welles
NL: Van David Lynch tot Park Chan-Wook, menig hedendaags filmmaker is schatplichtig aan de doemdromen en spiegelpaleizen van Franz Kafka. Het is dan ook geen wonder dat het werk van Kafka vele malen naar het doek werd gebracht, zij het met wisselend succes. Geen adaptatie weet echter zo ijzingwekkend goed de ziel van diens brontekst te vangen als Orson Welles’ “The Trial”. Deels geschoten in de ruïnes van Gare d’Orsay en gezegend met vlijmscherpe vertolkingen van o.a. Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau en Romy Schneider, slaagt Welles erin Kafka’s thematisch/stilistische stokpaardjes te vertalen naar een barok beeldgedicht.
Doorspekt met noir-invloeden en Koude Oorlog paranoia, wordt het verhaal lichtjes gemoderniseerd naar een tijdperk van losse zeden en atoomangst. Perkins dwaalt rond in een door leegtes gedomineerde wereld die verrassend veel doet denken aan post-oorlogs Europa. Kafka’s sfeer van allesdoordringend onbehagen blijft echter centraal staan en wordt vormelijk vertaald door een choreografie van claustrofobische cameraposities, ingenieus schaduwspel en surreëel set-design. Nachtmerries voelden nimmer zo verleidelijk.
The Trial werd in 2011 gerestaureerd door StudioCanal op basis van het originele negatief in het Scanlab laboratorium.

EN: From David Lynch to Park Chan-Wook, many contemporary filmmakers owe a treasure trove of inspiration to the gloomy self-reflections of Franz Kafka. No wonder, then, that Kafka’s own works have been adapted for the silver screen many times, albeit with middling success. No other adaptation is as chillingly effective at capturing the original spirit of the text as Orson Welles’ THE TRIAL. Partially shot in the ruins of the Gare d’Orsay and blessed with sharp acting performances from the likes of Anthony Perkins, Jeanne Moreau and Romy Schneider, Welles’ adaptation distills Kafka’s thematic and stilistic quirks into baroque visual poetry.
The film, drawing on the influences of noir cinema and contemporaneous Cold War paranoia, modernizes the story and sets it in an era of loose morals and nuclear fears. Perkins wanders around in a world dominated by empty crevasses, surprisingly evocative of post-WW2-Europe. Kafka’s touch, of ever-entrenching discomfort, remains central to the proceedings and is formatively translated in a series of claustrophobic camera positions, ingenous shadow play and surrealist set design. Nightmares never felt so seductive..
THE TRIAL was restored in 2011 by StudioCanal, using the original negatives in the Scanlab laboratory.
