Cinéclub RITCS: Lola Rennt (1998) - Tom Tykwer + voorfilm
NL: Een keuze van de Cinéclub, bestaande uit RITCS-studenten. De Duitse Lola heeft twintig minuten om haar vriendje te redden van de maffia. In een enerverende, gestoorde tocht door Berlijn trekt ze alle stoppen uit de kast om op tijd te zijn. Ze faalt. Maar dan keren we terug in de tijd en probeert ze het nog een keer. Deze Berlijnse “Groundhog Day” (of voor de streaming-generatie, Netflix’ “Russian Doll”) is een onmisbare, energetische parel, perfect voor mensen met een kleine aandachtsspan.
Als een soort Lara Croft spookt de roodharige Lola door Berlijn, en iedere keer maakt ze net andere keuzes. Heeft ze een vrije wil, of is het al vooraf vastgesteld wat er gaat gebeuren? Dat is de filosofische vraag die de film probeert te beantwoorden. Regisseur Tom Tykwer was geïnspireerd door Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Blind Chance (1982), waarin ook drie scenario’s werden opgeworpen met ieder een andere uitkomst, maar Tykwer plaatst ditzelfde idee in in een hippe Berlijnse setting met een megalomaan, MTV-esque editingtempo.
Het verhaal begint met Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), een koerier voor de lokale gangsters. Nadat hij een tas met 100.000 Duitse marken in een trein heeft laten staan, wordt hij bedreigd met de dood. Alleen zijn vriendin Lola kan hem nog redden. Ze springt direct in actie, ook al heeft ze geen auto en geen geld. Je raadt het al: ze zet het op een lopen. Run, Lola, Run!
Klokken, polshorloges en digitale uithangborden hangen onheilspellend boven Lola's hoofd. Als haar eerste poging om Manni te redden faalt, gebruikt Lola bijna letterlijk de terugspoelknop - door een onverklaarbare daad van God, of door postmodern scriptschrijven. Incidentele variaties in de volgende timelines - variërend van Lola’s tempo tot wie zij tegen het lijf loopt - maken het verschil in elke volgende run. Een bloedstollende arthouse actiethriller is het eindresultaat – een must-see film.

This Berliner interpretation of “Groundhog Day” (or for the streaming generation, Netflix’ “Russian Doll”) is an electrifying, energetic gem of a movie, perfect for those with a short attention span.
Lola, a red-haired Lara Croft-lookalike, dashes through Berlin, making slightly different choices each time she attempts the run again. Does she have free will, or is she a slave to a predetermined outcome? That is the philosophical question posed by this film. Director Tom Tykwer was inspired by Krzysztof Kieślowski's “Blind Chance“ (1982), which also featured three disparate scenarios, each with a different outcome. Tykwer recreates this same idea in a hip Berlin setting with a megalomaniac, MTV-esque editing pace.
Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), a courier for a gangster, has just done something terrible. Ducking from a tram to avoid transit cops, he accidentally left a bag on the train. A bag containing 100,000 marks – that's a whole lot of dough in Deutschland – which he's supposed to deliver to said gangster. By noon. That's in 20 minutes. And that's where his girlfriend Lola comes in. He just called her, petrified.
Don't worry, she tells him. She'll think of something. She has no car and no money and time is ticking. She starts running in Manni's direction – way the heck across town. Run, Lola, run.
Clock faces, wristwatches and digital signs hang ominously over Lola's head as she makes her first stop at the bank where her father works, hoping to get the money from him. In writer/director Tom Tykwer's movie, this is the first of her attempts to save Manni. When it doesn't work, Lola almost literally gets to use the rewind button – through an inexplicable act of God or postmodern scriptwriting.
Incidental variations in the path taken – ranging from whether she runs faster to whom she bumps into – make all the difference in each subsequent run. How are they going to find that bag? Is Manni going to be killed by the vicious gangster? Strange and one of a kind, "Run Lola Run" is a kinetic experiment with pulsating music.

A young woman is involved in an illegal money transfer. Two brothers with financial debts have to appear in court. The monetary rules are as firm as the heavy walls of the Palace of Justice.
