Research
RITCS fosters a vibrant research mindset. Whether it involves artistic or practice-based research, RITCS encourages an inquisitive attitude among its students, alumni, and lecturers.
ARTISTIC RESEARCH
We are convinced that artistic research and artistic practice go hand in hand. Every research endeavour stems from the individuality of the researcher, the artist, or from the uniqueness of an artistic collaboration.
Research at RITCS results in the creation of artworks (objects and performances), new media, and content for new media—whether physical, material, analogue, or digital—as well as publications. We organise and facilitate presentations in the form of festivals, exhibitions, conferences, concerts, and research days, where the courses are involved as much as possible both in terms of content and logistics.
RITCS has three 'layers' of research. Firstly, there is research carried out by RITCS lecturers, alongside their teaching duties, in the form of projects, ideally within a research collective. These projects run for two years and can be extended once—something that usually happens. Secondly, there are individual research paths for doctoral candidates in the arts, organised in collaboration with the Kunstenplatform Brussels (VUB/RITCS/KCB). These four-year trajectories typically result in a PhD. Vacancies for these positions can be announced annually in June, depending on the available financial resources. Finally, there are the laboratories—structural research spaces, either physical or virtual—where researchers, students, and artists, whether affiliated with RITCS or not, collaborate in areas we deem of structural importance for the present and future of RITCS as an arts school
