PRESENCE(S): Seminars & Encounters & Screenings - Carlos Reygadas & Natalia López Gallardo

A project by RITCS and CINEMATEK with KASK & Conservatorium and KASKA. Samenwerkingsfonds EhB, Hogeschool Gent and AP Hogeschool Antwerpen. Curated by RITCS-lecturer Wouter Hessels.
From June 2 to June 6 2025, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas (°1971) and Bolivian editor, actress, and director Natalia López Gallardo (°1980) will be our special guests. They are invited by RITCS/EhB, in the context of a fruitful dialogue between film theory and film practice. This research event is a collaboration between the three Schools of Arts (RITCS, KASK, KASKA).
Inspired by the films of masters such as Andrei Tarkovsky, Roberto Rossellini, Luis Buñuel, and Carl Theodor Dreyer, Reygadas has directed 5 feature films (selected and/or awarded at Cannes): “Japón” (2002), “Battle in Heaven” (2005), “Silent Light” (2007), “Post Tenebras Lux” (2012), and “Our Time” (2018). Natalia López Gallardo edited and acted in several of Reygadas' films and directed her own film, “Robe of Gems” (2022), which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
The intense, existentialist, at times audiovisually overwhelming, and other times poetically intimate ‘slow cinema’ style, as well as the profound, film-critical writings (“Presence”) of Reygadas and López, will form the subject of a three-day seminar with screenings and film excerpts on themes such as living and suffering (together), thinking film, subjective and participatory filmmaking, and analysing film together.
The goal of the seminars is to foster a (shared) historical awareness of cinema and film analytical skills among students, while also inspiring their individual and collective film practice. On Friday 6 June and within the three-day seminar, researchers Charlotte De Cort and Shauni De Gussem will organise a symposium based on the question: 'How does female subjectivity in film sound and look?'.
The central location of the event will be CINEMA RITCS (Dansaertstraat 70, 1000 Brussel).
As part of the seminars, CINEMATEK (Royal Belgian Film Museum, Baron Hortastraat 9, 1000 Brussels ) in Brussels will organise a complete retrospective of the contemporary works of Reygadas and López, along with a carte blanche for Carlos Reygadas.
