Seminar about Vittorio Storaro, Light and colour - Marijke Van Kets
Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…
“Niemand zou angst moeten hebben van kleur… Ik meen dat de kennis van de symboliek, de dramaturgie en de fysiologie van kleur fundamenteel zijn, zeker in het digitale tijdperk. Het laat ons toe om, met een groter bewustzijn, kleur te gebruiken in de visuele kunsten, en voornamelijk in cinema.” (Storaro, 2017)
Cinematografie kan begrepen worden als een verhaal vertellende kunst: het is dus niet enkel techniek maar een vorm van expressie. Een van de meest prominente cinematografen van de laatste decennia, Vittorio Storaro (1940), heeft uitvoerig getheoretiseerd over hoe het gebruik van gekleurd licht vorm geeft aan zijn artistieke uitdrukking.

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.
“No one should be afraid of colour… I think knowledge of the symbolism, dramaturgy and physiology of colour is fundamental, particularly in the digital age. It allows us to use colour with greater awareness in the visual arts, and especially in cinema.” (Storaro, 2017)
Cinematographers make images not to please or embellish, but they use filmic tools such as lights, colour, focal length, f-stop, camera height and camera movement to create storytelling moving images. Vittorio Storaro (1940) has theorised how the use of coloured light gives form to his artistic expression.
