Politics and Protest in Pandemic Times - Dieter Lesage, Margarita Tsomou & Lieven De Cauter
Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…
Eerder dan politiek te denken als politie, zoals de Franse filosoof Jacques Rancière voorstelt, zouden we politiek niet kunnen denken als zorg? Indien crises waarheden onthullen en indien er een kans is dat we het ware gelaat van de politiek gezien hebben tijdens de crisis die de Pandemie is, dan zagen we allicht dat de staat weet dat hij verondersteld wordt zorg te dragen voor de velen.
Was het niet bijzonder revelerend dat een van de belangrijkste bekommernissen van vele regeringen erin bestond om doorheen de Pandemie de beschikbaarheid van een voldoende aantal bedden en personeel op de afdelingen intensieve zorgen te garanderen. Een staat kan ofwel proberen aan de verwachtingen van de velen te beantwoorden, ofwel zal hij ontgoochelen. De vraag van velen, die zichtbaar wordt in vele protesten, is dat de staat en zijn vertegenwoordigers, of het nu gaat om politici of om politieagenten, zichzelf zouden zien als zorgverstrekkers. Tegelijk zijn er andere geluiden.
‘Politics and Protest in Pandemic Times’ is een serie van korte statements (in het Engels) met de Grieks-Duitse dramaturge Margarita Tsomou (HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlijn) en de filosofen Lieven De Cauter en Dieter Lesage, beiden onderzoekers aan het RITCS. De statements worden gevolgd door een gesprek, gemodereerd door de Nederlandse schrijfster, onderzoekster en curator Lara Staal.

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.
Rather than to think of ordinary politics as police, as the French philosopher Jacques Rancière suggests, could we propose care as an alternative name for ordinary politics? If crises have the capacity to reveal truths and if there is a chance that we saw the true face of politics during the crisis that was the Pandemic, then we probably saw that the state knows that it is supposed to take care of the many.
Wasn’t it particularly revealing to learn that one of the main concerns of many governments was the capacity to guarantee the availability of intensive care unit beds (and staff) throughout the Pandemic? Now, either the state lives up to this expectation by the many, or it disappoints. The demand of many, which is expressed by its tumult, is that the state and its representatives, whether politicians or police officers, should understand themselves as caretakers. At the same time, we were confronted with other sounds.
‘Politics and Protest in Pandemic Times’ offers a series of short statements (in English) by Greek-German dramaturge Margarita Tsomou (HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin) and Belgian philosophers Lieven De Cauter and Dieter Lesage, both researchers at RITCS, will be followed by a conversation, moderated by Dutch writer, researcher and curator Lara Staal.
