Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…
Dan Gilroys film uit 2014, Nightcrawler, is een satire op de hedendaagse media die onderling strijden om als eerste sensationeel nieuws en shockerende beelden te verspreiden. In die wedloop schiet de professionele ethiek er onvermijdelijk bij in, maar Lou Bloom – een onvergetelijke rol van Jake Gyllenhaal – rekt de grenzen van het toelaatbare wel heel ver op: van het gebruikelijke voyeurisme over enscenering tot participatie aan het ‘nieuws’.
Daarnaast is de film een parabel over hoe werk- en zichzelf zoekende ‘young potentials’ zich identificeren met in onze samenleving dominante waarden als ambitie en succes, en daarbij meer verliezen dan er ooit te winnen viel. Kortom, Nightcrawler is aanbevolen voor wie zich bijwijlen afvraagt of psychopathie het nieuwe normaal is en benieuwd is naar het uitstekende camerawerk waarmee Los Angeles by night wordt opgeroepen.

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.
Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler (2014) is a satire on contemporary media and their competition to be the first to break sensational news and spread shocking images. This race inevitably involves taking liberties with professional ethics, yet Lou Bloom – an unforgettable Jake Gyllenhaal – stretches the limits of the permissible to an extreme: from common voyeurism, to staging and participating in the ‘event’.
Besides this, the film can be viewed as a parable on ‘young potentials’ looking for work and for themselves, who embrace dominant values such as ambition and success, and end up losing more than there ever was to gain. In brief, Nightcrawler is recommended to anyone who may wonder whether psychopathy is the new normal, and who is curious about the outstanding camerawork which evokes an eerie Los Angeles by night.
