MASTERCLASS Documentary Choreography: Future of the Past
(NL) Van 27 tot en met 31 januari staat het RITCS een hele week lang in het teken van onderzoek. De focus van deze onderzoeksweek ligt op FUTURE NARRATIVES, verhalen van de toekomst.
Deze masterclass vertrekt van scènes uit drie recente theaterproducties van de Servische regisseur Sanja Mitrović: I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past, My Revolution is Better Than Yours en Danke Deutschland. Deze voorstellingen vormen slechts een klein deel van een uitgebreid artistiek oeuvre dat bestaat uit theaterproducties, publicaties, site-specific performances, skype events enzovoort.
Sanja Mitrović en haar dramaturg Jorge Palinhos presenteren in deze masterclass het concept van documentaire choreografie: hoe gebruiken we ritme en beweging als een theatraal middel? Hoe kunnen we ons bewust blijven van de complexiteit van historische processen en van de noodzaak deze complexiteit te respecteren en te bewaren, wanneer we proberen om deze processen te begrijpen en te representeren?
Het is op dit vlak dat de scène kan fungeren als een strijdveld in discussies over ‘de toekomst van het verleden’, in hoe we het verleden begrijpen, herinneren, construeren en interpreteren en zo actief de weg vrijmaken voor een specifieke visie op de toekomst. Maar de vraag dringt zich ook op hoe we pure representatie kunnen vermijden en het reële aan de oppervlakte kunnen brengen? En hoe kunnen we dit reële op de scène benaderen zonder er een al te simpele of naïeve representatie van te maken?

(ENG) From 27 to 31 January, RITCS School of Arts is devoted to research for a whole week. The focus of this research week is on FUTURE NARRATIVES, stories of the future.
Starting point of this masterclass are scenes from three recent theatre productions, created by Serbian director Sanja Mitrovic: I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past, My Revolution is Better Than Yours and Danke Deutschland. This is a small extract from an extensive artistic oeuvre consisting of theater productions, publications, site-specific performances, Skype events etc.
On this basis Sanja Mitrovic and her dramaturge Jorge Palinhos present the concept of documentary choreography: how do we use rhythm and dance/movement as a theatrical tool? How to keep us aware of the complexity of historical processes and the necessity to honor and preserve such complexity in our attempts to understand and represent them?
It is in this respect that the stage can act as a battlefield in struggles over ‘the future of the past, in how we understand, remember, construct, and interpret the past, and thus actively contribute to preparing ground for a specific vision of the future. But, how can we avoid pure representation and bring the presence of the real? And how we can we approach this real on stage without making it an all too simple or naive representation?
