The CANON of the history of technical theatre is a collaboration between art colleges within the framework of the European Erasmus+ program. CANON aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the history of theatre technology in Europe, zooming in on the practices and technologies that have developed there over the past few centuries. To this end, CANON collects information on performing arts equipment, people and buildings. Furthermore, CANON also gives access to numerous collections and sources. The researchers bring all this information together on a timeline, in an open data structure, which is gradually being filled in. At the same time, CANON is looking for effective methods to make this database accessible to professional and other users. One central point of interest here is visualisation: how do we make things visible in a way that stimulates the imagination of makers and co-makers in theatre (and beyond), so that they can engage with them.

At this edition of Future Narratives, CANON presents a new tool, namely an application-in-development that allows information about new discoveries in the field of (historical) theatre technology to be shared quickly and easily. This should make it possible to work together to unlock the data in a usable way, thus focusing on visualisation. The possibilities are limitless, we suspect, and all the more relevant for every theatre (co)maker.

Chris Van Goethem teaches at the technical theatre department of RITCS. His specializations are lighting, production and special effects. As part of the Expertise Centre for Technical Theatre, he researches the history of technical theatre, education and competence management, sustainability, and safety.

De CANON van de Podiumtechnische Geschiedenis is een samenwerking tussen kunsthogescholen in het kader van het Europese programma Erasmus+. CANON wil een bijdrage leveren aan een groter begrip van de geschiedenis van de theatertechniek in Europa en zoomt in op de praktijken en de technologieën die zich daar de voorbije eeuwen ontwikkeld hebben. Met het oog hierop verzamelt CANON informatie over apparatuur, mensen en gebouwen voor podiumkunsten. Verder linkt CANON ook naar tal van collecties en bronnen. De onderzoekers brengen al deze informatie samen op een tijdslijn, in een open datastructuur, die geleidelijk wordt ingevuld. Tegelijk zoekt CANON naar doeltreffende methodes om deze databank te ontsluiten voor professionele en andere gebruikers. Eén centraal aandachtspunt daarbij is visualisatie: hoe maken we de dingen zichtbaar op een manier die de verbeelding van makers en mee-makers in het theater (en ook daarbuiten) prikkelt, zodat ze er mee aan de slag kunnen.

CANON presenteert op deze editie van Future Narratives een nieuwe tool, namelijk een applicatie-in-ontwikkeling waarmee informatie over nieuwe vondsten op het terrein van de (historische) theatertechniek snel en makkelijk gedeeld kan worden. Zo moet het mogelijk worden om samen te werken aan een bruikbare ontsluiting van de data, met nadruk dus op de visualisatie. De mogelijkheden zijn onbegrensd, zo vermoeden we, en alleszins relevant voor elke theater(mee)maker.

Chris Van Goethem is lesgever aan de afdeling podiumtechniek van RITCS. Zijn specialisaties zijn belichting, productie en special effects. In het kader van het kenniscentrum podiumtechnieken onderzoekt hij de geschiedenis van de podiumtechnieken, onderwijs- en competentiemanagement, duurzaamheid en veiligheid.
