FILMSCREENING: La Commune

(NL) Van 27 tot en met 31 januari staat het RITCS een hele week lang in het teken van onderzoek. De focus van deze onderzoeksweek ligt op FUTURE NARRATIVES, verhalen van de toekomst.

Sanja Mitrović, die aan een doctoraat rond documentair theater werkt, koos 'La Commune' van Peter Watkins (2000, Engelse ondertiteling), een historisch drama. 'La Commune' geldt als een model voor het ‘re-enactment’ van historische gebeurtenissen, dat zowel theater- als filmmakers blijft inspireren. Watkins maakte een ‘re-enactment’ van de tragisch afgelopen opstand, in 1871, van het Parijse proletariaat tegen de officiële regering van Frankrijk, die in Versailles resideerde.

Parijs werd tijdens de Frans-Duitse oorlog, die door het nieuwe Duitse keizerrijk gewonnen was, maandenlang belegerd, met grote hongersnood tot gevolg. De ontregelde Parijse samenleving waagde een riskant politiek en maatschappelijk experiment, dat door de autoriteiten finaal de kop werd ingedrukt tijdens de semaine sanglante, de bloedige week, eind mei 1871.

In de epische reconstructie van deze - volgens marxisten - eerste échte proletarische revolutie, spelen honderden amateurs de gebeurtenissen na, op straat en in de huizen en scholen. Deze spelers behoorden vaak zelf tot de groep van hedendaagse ‘verworpenen der aarde’: werklozen, migranten, enzovoorts.

Watkins kadert de vertelling door twee televisiestations – behoorlijk anachronistisch – commentaar te laten leveren over het verloop van de revolutie: de dominante (en dubbelzinnige) rol van de media maakt dit indrukwekkende verhaal extra relevant voor de samenleving van vandaag, met nieuwe frustraties en nieuwe ongelijkheden.

(ENG) From 27 to 31 January, RITCS School of Arts is devoted to research for a whole week. The focus of this research week is on FUTURE NARRATIVES, stories of the future.

Sanja Mitrovic, who is working on a PD in the Arts on documentary theatre, has chosen the film La Commune of Peter Watkins (2000, English subtitles), a historical drama.

Watkins made a ‘re-enactment’ of the 1871 insurrection, which ended tragically, of the Parisian proletariat against the official government of France, residing in Versailles. Paris had been besieged for many months, during the French-German war, won by the new German Kaiserreich, which caused a terrible famine.

This disordered Parisian society tried a risky political and social experiment, which was finally crushed by the authorities during the semaine sanglante, the bloody week at the end of May 1871. In an epic reconstruction of this first real proletarian revolution – according to Marxists –, hundreds of amateurs re-enact the events, in the streets and in houses and schools. These actors often belonged themselves to the group of contemporary ‘damned of the earth’: jobless, migrants, etcetera.

Watkins frames his narrative by installing two television channels – quite anachronistically – which comment on the course of the revolution: the dominant (and ambiguous) role of the media makes this impressive story still more relevant for today’s society, with its new frustrations and its new inequalities
