Faust (1926) - Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau

  • CINEMA RITCS

Engels: Murnau’s FAUST (1926) is now recognized as one of the most iconic works of German expressionism. Its over-the-top acting, par the course for silent film, is supplemented beautifully with a variety of spectacular special effects and ingenious use of a multiple-camera-setup. This belies Murnau’s ambitious drive as a filmmaker, which caused FAUST to go over budget – and necessitate a very long shooting period. The film did not impress critics at the time, nor did it break even at the box office; Murnau had produced an outright flop. In contemporary times, however, we recognize FAUST as a masterpiece alongside Murnau’s NOSFERATU (1922) and SUNRISE (1927).

Doctor Faust is an ambitious alchemist on the German countryside, who loses his soul to the devil after making a deal to further his power. In this film, based on the eponymous German folk tale, Faust learns that magical power has its downsides, especially because the Devil wastes zero opportunities to make Faust’s life hell.
