Editing (and) another kind of internet (on campus)

  • FUTURE NARRATIVES

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.

For online communication and audiovisual art production, we lease platforms and programs from big tech companies. In exchange for our data or money, we temporarily feel at home in virtual places, but are they really ours? Do we have a say in their evolution? How about rights of entry or freedom of speech?

On the other side we use open source programs and platforms that do belong to everybody - but do they allow us to work efficiently and competitive? What do they necessitate to become more sustainable than a subscription at a multinational?

14:00-15:00
Via Live Streaming, multimedia artist Olivier Meunier will present open source alternatives to GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft) with the possibility of asking your questions via chat. The Live Stream is organised in cooperation with MoBo and the students Audiovisual Media of RITCS, entirely on the basis of open source applications. Reservation is obligatory, you will receive the link one day before the event.

15:00-18:00
Then, we zoom in on open source in grading and editing. With Olivier Meunier, students and teachers from 3 BA Editing, you can test out a couple/range of multiplatform-open source editing programs. We close the afternoon by assembling recommendations/ a self help kit for those in "editing distress."

Bring your own laptop if possible!
