Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…
Maskers zijn een wapen van protest geworden - internationale symbolen van acties tegen machtsstructuren. Een individu kan verslagen of gecorrumpeerd worden, maar niet een idee. Dankzij het masker kan het individu het idee worden. We leven in een tijd van crisissen en falende economische systemen. Geen wonder dat vragen over verandering steeds weer terugkomen. De protestcultuur heeft een opleving.
Elke revolutie heeft zijn eigen iconen. Tegenwoordig zien we het masker opduiken. Het dragen van een masker is een carnavaleske strategie. Carnaval is een ritueel, het tijdelijk ontmantelen van sociale en politieke regimes, het opschorten van normen en waarden. Maar na deze beperkte periode van toegestane wanorde en verandering wordt de orde hersteld. De vraag rijst dus: dient de huidige protestgolf als een illusie van carnaval? Of zijn we de functie van carnaval vergeten? Zijn we vergeten dat het doel van het ritueel is om te herinneren?

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.
Masks have become a weapon of protest - international symbols of actions against power structures. An individual can be defeated or corrupted, but not an idea. Thanks to the mask, the individual can become the idea. We live in times of crises and failing economic systems. No wonder that questions of change are recurrent. Protest culture is having a revival.
Every revolution has its icons. Nowadays, we see the mask show up. Wearing a mask is a carnivalesque strategy. Carnival is a ritual, temporarily dismantling social and political regimes, suspending norms and values. But after this limited period of allowed disorder and change, the order is restored. So the question arises: does the current wave of protests serve as an illusion of carnival? Or have we forgotten the function of carnival? Have we forgotten that the purpose of the ritual is to remember?
