The Chouas #Episode5: Am I the only one who is like me? - Saddie Choua
Van 25 tot 29 januari 2021 organiseert het RITCS, voor de tweede keer, een hele onderzoeksweek onder de vlag Future Narratives. Net als in 2020 presenteren onderzoekers – seniors en doctorandae/i – hun werk, hun traject, hun artistieke en theoretische onderzoeksresultaten. Zij nodigen daarbij verwante geesten uit, gesprekspartners, kunstenaars en intellectuelen die hen uitdagen - mensen die iets te zeggen en te tonen hebben. En dit in de vorm die het best hun verhaal doet uitkomen: workshops, lezingen, panelgespreken, webinars, performances, screenings…
‘Am I The Only One Who Is Like Me?’ is de vijfde aflevering van de soapserie ‘De Chouas’, waarin Saddie Choua haar eigen familie opvoert. Choua legt nieuwe verbanden tussen beelden en geluidsfragmenten uit de populaire cultuur en schept een imaginaire, pseudo-realistische wereld gebaseerd op haar persoonlijke archieven. De installatie geeft haar esthetische kritiek op macht weer. Ze doorprikt de discriminerende praktijken in onze samenleving en wakkert de kritische geest van de toeschouwer aan door hem of haar te confronteren met zijn eigen stereotypes en zijn gehechtheid aan dominantiesystemen te bevragen. Audre Lorde zegt dat woede een kracht is die wijsheid bevat. “Het is niet deze woede die de samenwerking tussen wit en zwart, man en vrouw, tussen verschillende sociale klassen verstoort, maar de weigering om ernaar te luisteren. Saddie Choua zet deze woede om in een visuele vorm”, aldus Lorde.

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them - people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.
‘Am I The Only One Who Is Like Me?’ is the fifth episode of the soap series ‘The Chouas’, in which Saddie Choua introduces her own family as characters. Choua makes new connections between images and sound from popular culture and creates an imaginary, pseudo-realistic world based on her personal archives. The installation reflects her aesthetic critique of power. She shatters discriminatory practices in our society and awakens the spectator's critical mind by confronting him with his own stereotypes and questioning his attachment to dominant systems. Audre Lorde says anger is a force that contains wisdom. “It is not this anger that disturbs the relationship between white and black, men and women, between different social classes, but the refusal to listen to it. Saddie Choua transforms this anger into a visual form ”, says Lorde.
