THE ANTHROPOCENE: Accelerationism versus Collapsology

  • FUTURE NARRATIVES

(ENG) From 27 to 31 January, RITCS School of Arts is devoted to research for a whole week. The focus of this research week is on FUTURE NARRATIVES, stories of the future.

Lieven De Cauter invites intellectual jack-of-all-trades Laurent de Sutter (legal theorist) and Rudi Laermans (sociologist) for a conversation about the Anthropocene, starting from the polarity accelerationism versus collapsology.

In order to clarify the terms, the ‘Anthropocene’ is the geological era during which the development of the earth is primarily and even almost exclusively determined by human agency; ‘collapsology’ is an interdisciplinary approach of the “process in which basic human needs (water, food, housing, clothing, energy, etc.) cannot be provided anymore, at a reasonable cost, for the majority of the population, by legally anchored services” (definition of Yves Cochet); ‘accelerationism’ is a way of thought studying the possibility to accelerate the, mainly ecological, excesses of capitalism in order to make the capitalist system finally collapse.

Both visions are being confronted with each other: the prevention of the disaster, of the ‘collapse’ thanks to science, or the ‘acceleration’ of the disaster, by forms of activism. They will also consider the role the rediscovery of the ‘commons’ can play, and whether and how heterotopia can be a home for one of the central figures of the Anthropocene: the refugee. Finally, the question of activism and civil disobedience will be addressed.

The discussion will take place in English.
