Timing is everything

As an editor, you decide if a story makes a lasting impression. You manipulate time, rhythm, and tension. How do you build a scene? Which takes do you select, and how do you combine them for maximum narrative and dramatic effect? In this programme, you’ll master key editing decisions, from smooth shot transitions to balancing image and sound. Developing an eye for detail and precision will help you create logical and compelling narratives. You’ll also learn how rhythm and timing heighten emotions and engage audiences.

Technique and storytelling

Editing is far more than cutting and splicing. You will gain hands-on experience with editing software and the technical foundations of post-production. But just as importantly, you’ll explore how to evoke emotion and captivate viewers. How do you adjust pacing for tension? How do music and sound create atmosphere? You’ll cultivate a personal style, thinking critically about structure, tempo, rhythm, music, and sound design. The programme encourages experimentation and refines your artistic vision, turning you into a powerful storyteller who combines technical prowess with creativity.

Collaboration and Communication

Editing is a collaborative art. You’ll work closely with directors and producers to realise their creative vision. In documentary filmmaking, where the story often emerges during editing, your role is pivotal. You shape narratives that move and inspire. Throughout the programme, you’ll collaborate with students in directing, production, cinematography, and sound design, honing your communication and diplomacy skills to navigate diverse creative perspectives. By integrating your expertise with others, you’ll learn to craft impactful results.

All classes are in Dutch.
