Cinematography
As a cinematography student, you will creatively develop a story or visual concept with attention to mood creation through light, image composition and movement.
Cinematography is the art of "seeing and visualizing. Producing moving images in function of a story not only requires a dose of creativity, it also requires the necessary knowledge of film technology.
Film is teamwork. During the program you will work with students who focus on directing, production, sound design and editing but with plenty of room for your personal research and the development of your own visual style. In the master, the result of that personal research takes shape by taking up the position: director of photography.
All classes are in Dutch.
Bachelor
In the first year, you will explore the fundamental concepts necessary for telling an audiovisual story alongside students from writing, directing, production, sound design, and editing. You will be immersed in the history of art, culture, and film; receive your first lessons in screenwriting, directing, and production; and participate in joint practical sessions for fiction and documentary work. This lays the groundwork for future collaborations, each from their increasingly specialised disciplines. There will also be some specific courses, including cinematography and camera techniques, as well as joint practical sessions for fiction and documentary.
From the second year onwards, the cinematography track will focus on two practical disciplines: fiction and documentary, with attention to video, film, digital cinema, and post-production. As a student, you will embark on an artistic exploration of the possibilities of light, image composition, and movement to creatively enhance a visual concept or story. Developing a visual concept requires more than just 'seeing and visualising'; you must also possess the necessary technical know-how to handle movement, form, light, and colour.
Master
Your personal exploration of a unique visual style will take shape in the Master’s in Cinematography through the creation of a visual concept or story in the role of 'director of photography.' A professional jury will assess your work and evaluate its worth.
